Turning Insight into Action: Overcoming Roadblocks Through Coaching and Peer Support

Professional growth happens when individuals move beyond awareness and intentionally apply new skills in their daily work. For donation professionals, that often means examining personal habits, overcoming barriers, and learning how to navigate challenging family conversations with greater confidence and effectiveness.

This interactive cohort coaching session, Overcoming Professional Roadblocks Through Action Planning and Peer Coaching, brought together donation professionals from organizations across the country to identify behavioral roadblocks that may be limiting their effectiveness and develop practical strategies for growth. Guided by Chad and Michelle, participants engaged in reflection, discussion, peer coaching, and action planning designed to support long-term professional development.

Drawing on DeGarmo's research regarding work styles and authorization outcomes, participants explored the complex relationship between empathy, influence, independence, and resilience. The group discussed how empathy helps build trust and connection while also recognizing that excessive empathy can sometimes make it difficult to transition conversations, maintain objectivity, or address difficult topics effectively.

Participants then worked to identify and clearly define their individual roadblocks, including challenges such as compassion fatigue, fear of exploring family concerns, over-apologizing, difficulty transitioning conversations, and over-preparing. Through peer discussion and guided reflection, participants gained insight into behaviors within their control and opportunities for improvement.

The session concluded with collaborative strategy development and action planning. Participants explored cognitive, emotional, and action-based approaches to overcoming identified challenges and partnered with colleagues to provide accountability and ongoing support. By combining self-awareness, practical strategies, and peer learning, participants left with a personalized plan for continued growth and increased confidence in their professional practice.
