Successful donation conversations begin long before donation is formally introduced. Donation Advocates must continually assess family dynamics, emotional readiness, understanding of prognosis, and interpersonal influences to determine not only how to approach a conversation, but when. This forum will examine the critical role of readiness assessment in creating respectful, family-centered donation discussions.
Participants will explore how Donation Advocates gather and interpret information from families, hospital staff, and the broader care environment to evaluate understanding, acceptance of prognosis, and overall readiness for engagement. The session will highlight practical strategies for identifying key decision-makers, recognizing indicators of readiness or resistance, and adapting communication approaches based on each family's unique circumstances.
The discussion will focus on balancing timing, pacing, and presence throughout the family's journey. Through practical examples and peer discussion, attendees will examine how careful observation, active listening, and thoughtful assessment can lead to more meaningful conversations and better support families during highly emotional moments. Rather than moving conversations forward quickly, participants will explore how to approach families at the right moment, with the right awareness, and in the right way.
