CP-FND-101:
Emily Foster
When Grief Takes Over
Emily Foster is a 24-year-old ICU nurse who has worked in the Neuro ICU for just over eight months and is caring for Robert Collins following a devastating traumatic brain injury. Robert’s injuries are non-survivable, and his family is expected to make end-of-life decisions later today. Over several days, Emily has developed a close relationship with Robert’s wife and adult daughter while helping them understand his condition and cope with the situation. Although Emily supports organ donation in principle, she has participated in only one previous donation case and remains uncertain about how the process fits into end-of-life care. She worries that introducing donation at the wrong time could create additional distress or cause the family to believe the hospital has given up on Robert.
CHALLENGES
- Address Emily's concern that introducing organ donation could disrupt the trust and emotional support established with Robert's family.
- Navigate Emily's limited experience and uncertainty about the Donation Advocate's role, timing, and approach with the family.
